I've Got Answers (The Ladynay Edition)

here's the latest batch of answers to my Ask Me Anything (Again!) post. since Ladynay asked me a zillion questions (LOL), i decided to put all her questions in one post. i have one more set of questions i'll post tonight or sometime tomorrow. until then, happy reading!

Favorite tangible item?
lately it's been this red work tote i picked up from Target. i feel uber-professional when i carry it.

Lost everything you own, who's the first person you call?
well, i assume my cell phone is gone too. so, i'd call my grandmother. hers is the only number i know by heart.

2nd favorite color?
yellow. it actually used to be my favorite color before the color red replaced it.

Heels or tennis shoes?
heels, heels, and more heels! i adore a nice pair of stilettos or pumps. i think i own about 2 pairs of tennis shoes and multiple pairs of heels. i mean, i own flats and wear them often, but they can't be plain. they must have some kind of flair to them.

Now that you've had a taste of elementary school, would you consider teaching in the middle or high school realm?
i would definitely consider teaching high school students. i feel like i could relate to them a lot more than the younger students. but, i would not want to teach middle schoolers! girl, the hormones are too out of whack! that being said, teaching first grade really sets children up for success in their later years. several of my friends who teach the older grades feel that there work would be so much easier if their students had a more solid foundation.

First thing you do when you wake up?
this may be TMI, but the first thing i do is go and empty my bladder. for some reason, i don't wake up in the night to use the bathroom.

Favorite breakfast?
my aunt's biscuits (with honey), grits and cheese and apple juice.

Shoot, do you eat breakfast?
typically, i don't. i don't like waking up early as it is, so usually only allow myself enough time to shower, get dressed, and collect my things. also, when i have breakfast, i like a real home cooked breakfast. cereal, yogurt, and all of that are okay, but don't quite hit the spot for me.

What side of the bed do you sleep on?
i typically start out on the left side.

What's the next piece of furniture you want to buy?
hmmm... that's a good question. i'm torn between purchasing a coffee table or a bookcase. the coffee table would be useful in the living room. however, i have a lot of books that are in the hall closet (which has a lot of shelves, for some reason). it feels wrong to have all my books hidden away like that.

Everyone thinks it's trash, but you think it's a treasure...what is it?
this cherry blossom bathrobe i have. it has a huge rip in the shoulder, is faded, and not really all that becoming. but, my mom gave it to me and i can't bear to part with it.

Do you sing in the shower? The car?
yes to both! for some reason, when i'm in the shower i like to sing gospel songs. LOL! and not contemporary gospel, but the old gospel hymns from back in the day (i.e. Oh Happy Day). and, yes, i sing in the car all the time! in that case, i'm usually singing "my song" they're playing on the radio at the time. oh, and don't let it be an "old" song! i'll turn the radio up really loud and sing along. the other day i heard Playa's "Cheers 2 U," and about died! does anyone else remember that song?

Have you been karoking (sp)
nah... i'm not brave enough to do it.

Have you ever been past drunk?
nope... i drink occasionally, but i've never been drunk or past drunk. i think it's the part of me that likes to be in control of everything that pertains to me.

Favorite past time?
reading, reading, and more reading. when the book is really good, i'll lose track of time and realize i've spent the entire day reading. i've been that way since i was a little girl.

Do you like sports or going to sporting events?
the only sport i like to watch is basketball, and i don't really feel the need to go to the actual game. watching it from home is just fine. i don't like going to sporting events because there are too many people. i get really anxious and agitated when at events with a lot of people. so, know that if i am such an event, then i really, really want to be there.

You seem to have really enjoyed your college years, would you do it again?
do you mean, would i go to college again? or do you mean would i chose to go the same college? well, either way it goes, my answer is yes. to be honest, i don't know what i would've done after high school besides going to college. i mean, i obviously would have stayed in Tulsa, but i knew for quite some time that i was destined for bigger and better things. as for going to Spelman, i always say that my decision to attend the school was the best decision i made for myself. that being said, i would change a few choices i made while in college, but not the decision to attend.

How long have you known your longest termed friend. Let me state that different, out of all your friends who have you known the longest and how long have you known them?
that would have to be this male friend i have. i used to have a blog name for him, but it escapes me now. anyway, we grew up in the same church, and i think my family started attending that church when i was in the 1st or 2nd grade. however, i don't know if he truly counts as the friend i've known the longest. see, we didn't actually become friends until my junior (his senior) year of high school. he sat in front of me in French class and the rest is history. the funny thing is that for most of the time we were becoming friends i had a huge crush on him. to this day, i wonder if he knew it. anyway, i'm not crushing on him now; he's more like the older brother i never had. he knows me so well and i can always count on him to never lead me astray. (hmmm... i think i'll send him a text right now.)

You can only eat one food for the rest of your life, what is it?
honestly, i'd probably die of starvation. i get bored with food pretty easily. mind you, i don't get bored with eating. but, i'll really be into one type for a while, get tired of it and not purchase it for a minute, move onto something else, and the cycle continues. so, if i had to eat one food for the rest of my life, i don't think it'd work out for me.

You win a billion tax free dollars, what's the first thing you purchase?
a new car! lol... the thing is my car is in really good shape and i don't need a new one. i just want another vehicle, for some reason. however, once my current car is paid off, i plan to drive it until the wheels fall off!

You still thinking about grad school?
yep. see my answer to BronzeBuckaroo on the last post; he pretty much asked the same question.

Need more questions? :-)
no, i'm good. ;-)

I've Got Answers!

Here is the first installment of questions for Ask Me Anything. for the most part, i went in order of how they were received. Ladynay, you'll be getting your own post! lol... I'll post the rest of the answers between Tuesday and Thursday...

from Zackory Kirk/Your Favorite Teacher:
1. Do you think you will retire from education?
i doubt it. that being said, i don't plan to teach for the rest of my life. in fact, i'm not planning to go beyond my two year commitment. however, i think i'll always be passionate about and want to be involved in making life better for the type of children i teach. that will never stop. the field of education encompasses so much; i just have to find my place in that world.

2. What has been the best book you have ever read?
oh, this was a hard question! i read a lot; several summers ago i read like 30 books. yeah, that's how serious i am about reading. that being said, i think it's a tie between Lion's Blood by Steven Barnes and My Soul to Keep, by his wife, Tananarive Due. i loved the former because it flipped the script on history and made me really question how things would really be if Blacks were actually the enslavers as opposed to the enslaved. My Soul to Keep is definitely a sci-fi novel. and i'm typically not into sci-fi. However, that book, along with the sequel are simply excellent. after reading both of those authors, i started getting into Octavia Butler, who of course set the stage for sci-fi writing.

3. What has been the best advice you were ever given?
hmmm... i think it would be that Audre Lorde quote ^^ (under my blog title). various people have given me that advice, in their own explicit and implicit ways. that being said, while it's the best advice i've received, it's sometimes the hardest to adhere to.

from honey libra/Ms. Honey:
I need to get caught up but whatever happened to that dr guy you were talking to...do you still talk to him?
so, i had to think really hard and see if i ever mentioned talking to a doctor. and, i came up with nothing. you sure you're not thinking of another blogger? ;-) i have a few friends, however, who have just graduated from or are in medical school. also, the boyfriend (CO) is in law school; i know that's not related to being a doctor, but it is another fairly common profession.

from D-Place
1. What would you do if you won $100 Million Dollars in the lottery?
first, i would pay tithes. then, i would pay off all forms of debt--- credit cards, student loans, car note, even pay my car insurance in full. that way my only expenses would be food, clothing, and shelter. i can't see myself having that much money and still making monthly payments on anything. that being said, i'd then purchase either a townhouse or cute little condo. i don't need a lot of house and i don't plan to stay in Houston that long, but it'd be nice to have the kind of place i really want; my current apartment is fine, but i sometimes feel like i settled. i'd invest a great deal of the money as well. in what, you may ask? oh, i don't know. that's why i'd hire a broker to take care of those details. i'd also buy my grandmother a new home or buy the one she's currently living in from my uncle. then i would fix it up however my grandmother wanted it. i'd pay for my brother's college education. he'll be a senior this school year and i don't want him to have to bear the burden of college loans, as i have to do. i would probably also set up a few scholarships via my high school and college. hmmm.... that's all i can think of right now. Ladynay asked a similar question, so i'll probably think of some more things to do with all that money.

2. What is one place in the world where you have never been that you'd like to visit or live?
i've always wanted to visit Africa--- specifically Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. i'm trying to figure out a way to make that trip.

3. What is your astrological sign?
I'm a Scorpio.

4. What is one God given gift that you wish you had that you don't?
i really wish i could sing well; i don't think i'd like to be a professional singer, but i would love to have an amazing voice. for now, i'll settle for having a boyfriend who has that God given gift.

BronzeBuckaroo:
Have you decided on that Ph.D?
yes. well... kind of. i'm going to apply to a few schools and see what happens. i'm leaving myself open to the idea (which is a huge step, b/c at one point, i'd completely ruled it out). i'm also training myself to pray a lot more about this situation. well, with my career in general, to be honest. i think doing that and doing what i'm supposed to do and not necessarily what i think i should be doing will help me be more satisfied with my career choices.

T.C.:
tell us something new with you...any new hopes, dreams, plans? (i don't know i am never good at this stuff...LOL)
it's ok. i'm not really good with asking questions, either.:-) hmmm... something new with me. i think i covered most of it in the post before this one. ok, there is this one thing i'm trying to keep on the low. up until now, getting married was one of those "if it happens, great! if not, that's great too!" kinds of things. i was not pressed at all. and i'm not thirsty for marriage now. but, i do really want to get married. i know some of you may be thinking, "ok, big deal, you want to get married." but, you see, to me it is a big deal because there was a time in my life where getting married wasn't even something i could see myself doing and i'd apparently been giving that vibe to others as well. a few months ago, a friend i've had since high school were talking about our futures (careers and otherwise) and i mentioned getting married. she was shocked and said that was the first time she'd ever hear me mention marriage. and we've been friends for about 10 years...

One Man's Opinion:
I'm new, Mrs. Butterfly, so I don't know enough about you and your blog to ask any real questions. I would like to know how you happened upon my blog?
well, i noticed your blog on someone's blog roll. i think it was BronzeBuckaroo... i mean, a blog titled "Look at This Nigger" is certainly eye-catching! :-) anyway, i came, i saw, and i liked!

Me: From A-Z

i could be out enjoying the weekend. but, it's hot as hell here in Houston and since i'm on vacation, every day pretty much feels like the weekend. so, why not do a meme? you know the drill: if you like it, take it and post it on your blog. oh, and if you've seen this before, you may notice i tweaked it here and there... i'm also still taking questions for my Ask Me Anything post. i just decided to do this in the meantime.

A is for your age: 25; i typically hate to tell people my age. with a few exceptions, i'm usually amongst people who are older than me and i dread hearing the "oh, you're still a baby!" comments. it grates on me to no end. the fact that i won't have to hear that anymore one of the reasons i actually look forward to getting older.

B is for your burger of choice: i don't really eat burgers (or red meat, for that matter). when i do eat one, i like it with lettuce, tomato, mayo, ketchup, and most importantly, grilled onions.

C is for the car that you drive: a pretty blue Dodge Neon. once she's paid off, i plan to drive her until the wheels come off!

D is for dog’s name: no dog for me; my complex charges $400 to have a pet. however, i would like a dog.

E is for an essential item you use each day: my cell phone; when it got stolen a few months ago, i was at a complete and utter loss. that being said, there are times when i go out and leave my cell at home. i don't like always being accessible, but i do like having information readily accessible to me.

F is for your favorite television show: ok, so if you've been reading me awhile, you know i've never owned a television. i've lived in homes with televisions, of course. so, my favorite show would have to be CSI (the original, not that Miami crap)

G is for favorite game: hmmm... i don't know. maybe i'll come back to this one later.

H is for hometown: Tulsa, OK

I is for instruments played: i'm not musically inclined. i wish i could play the piano. my grandmother knows how (sort of), but when i asked her to teach me, it didn't really go so well.

J is for favorite juice: cranberry. i'll drink it straight or mixed with any number of things--- apple juice, Sprite, Grey Goose... ;-)

K is for what you’d like to kick: myself for forgetting (again!) to mail off a bill. it's the only bill i haven't (but need to) set up e-payments for.

L is for last restaurant you dined at: two of my teacher friends and i went to Chuy's. before moving to Houston, i hated Mexican. now, i can't get enough!

M is for your favorite Muppet: Miss Piggy

N is for number of piercings you have: both of my ears are pierced. i don't plan on getting anymore. but, i am considering a tattoo...

O is for overnight hospital stays: one in ICU last year.

P is for people you were with today: no one. i haven't even answered the phone or returned calls.

Q is for what you do in quiet times: read, surf the Internet, or blog.

R is for regrets: not asking or talking to my mom about some things i wanted to know/had on my mind before she passed away.

S is for status: i'll take this to mean relationship status. in that case, i have a boyfriend, who i refer to as CO on this blog. for various reasons i don't blog about the particulars of our relationship very often.

T is for time you woke up today: i don't know the exact time, but it was after 10 a.m. or so. as long as school is out, i have no plans to wake up early unless i absolutely must do so.

U is for something that you find unique: this is general, but i like knowing people's little idiosyncrasies. for example, i have a friend who likes to sit smack dab in the middle of a row when we go to the movies. this chick has gone so far as to count the seats to make sure she's in the middle. for some reason, i love knowing those little quirks.

V is for least favorite vegetable: i'll eat most any vegetable, but i don't like carrots, for some reason. raw, cooked, added into a dish, i just don't like them.

W is for your worst habit: procrastination!

X is for x-rays you have had: chest and teeth

Y is for yummy food you ate today: Oreo cookies. i really need to eat some real food.

Z is for zodiac sign: Scorpio
