behind...

  • behind in school, work, organizing for the semester, soap making, and just about everything else. why? I've been sick. :-( Austin's had off the charts cedar levels, and of course I'm allergic to cedar. I've also had a cold, so I've had allergy issues one day and cold issues the next. It rained for a few days a week or so ago and I was in heaven! This week it's been warm, though, so the cedar has been off the charts. It's supposed to rain all this week, so I can be well again. yay!
  • on Wednesday we went to get ID badges. why did my face look like Precious? ok... maybe it wasn't that big. but, it was definitely puffy. i have on the exact same outfit as the one in my profile pic. so, picture that with a round face. the only difference between the two pics is I took one when I could breathe and the other was taken after being congested for a week. ugh...
  • School started on the 18th and I'm already ready for it to be over. classes are cool, but i'm over it all. i'm taking a Contemporary Black Education course and the prof. is a little nuts. he has us reading a book a week. And not some light weight books, but texts like Up from Slavery, The Miseducation of the Negro, and The Souls of Black Folk. (-_- ) yes, i know this is grad school and the work load will be heavier, BUT reading a whole book denotes a lack of focus. I almost dropped the class, but I'm going to push through until May since the assignments are light.
  • ok, so I am excited about (and terrified by) another class i'm taking whose whole purpose is for us to come out with our dissertation proposal (an overview of my proposed plan of work for the actual dissertation). it's exciting because the class offers the first glimmer of light at the end of tunnel. after this semester, i have a year of coursework, and then a year for the dissertation.
  • i'm also wondering if i will be able to work two jobs and go to school full time next school year. in order to complete everything in two years, i may have to resume my four classes per semester schedule. the other option is to take two classes over the summer (again), but summer classes are hard to come by. so... we'll see what happens.
  • confession: more often than not, i want to work a regular 9-5, be a wife and mom and... that's it.
  • i started the teaching assistant gig the same week school started. observations start next week, but I've met the students/interns i'm going to work with. i haven't gotten a feel for their personalities yet, but some don't follow directions. i asked four of them to send me 3 times that i can come for their 1st observation in February.  (i'm seeing all of them, at the same school, on the same day.) two of them e-mailed me back with only one time. of course, it was the exact same time. *sigh* I'd already clearly explained that I needed 3 times because there is bound to be overlap since they're teaching in the same grade levels. as you might be able to tell, i have little patience for repeating myself to adults. i'm working on it, though...
  • i went to Wal-Mart today and on a whim, decided to buy a new set of dishes. well, it wasn't exactly a whim; i'd been wanting a new set for a while because the ones we have are chipped. anyway, i get home with the set, only to find out JE had been planning to buy me some new dishes. :-( womp, womp. he said he'd told me he was, but i don't recall that. never fear, though, because i told him some other household items i had my eye on! #wishlist (that hash tag was for you, BH!)
  • for the past few years i've gone on a FB hiatus in late January/early February. i started this year's month long hiatus this week and for the most part, i don't miss it. i will say i do miss being able to post a status with a question about something and 9 times out of 10, i get a response. i have a Twitter account, but it's not the same. but by and large, i'm enjoying the hiatus.
  • my grand plans to make some cute Valentine's Day soaps and send them to family may not come to pass. the money i would have spent on soap stuff this month went to tires, and so my order has to be pushed to the end of the month. unfortunately, the place i usually order my supplies from isn't operating on their 24 hour turn around time (to ship orders), and are now taking about a week. their business picked up tremendously over the holidays and they're going through some growing pains to accommodate everyone, so i can understand the issue and will continue to buy from them. nevertheless, the shipping times throws a wrench in my plans.
  • my new contact/business cards should arrive this week. I had some made back in August, but I don't like them. i mean, the cards look nice, but after i thought about it, they don't convey exactly what i'd like them to (i.e. they didn't list my research interests, and only listed that i was a graduate student, and didn't specify that i was a doctoral student.) those are small things, but since my intent was to have them for conferences and networking opportunities, i need them to be clear. also, they didn't look like... me, you know? so, when I got an e-mail from the site advertising free business cards (among other things), i decided on these.
  • why is it that every time i hear "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," I think about that episode of Designing Women when Charlene's cousin was being abused by her husband?
  • man, i want a Kindle! Lord knows i don't need a Kindle, but i want it.that might just be my summer splurge purchase. we'll see what my money looks like this summer.
  • i did a dance of joy when World Star Hip Hop got shut down last week.  only to find out that trash is alive again. :-(
until next time...

how 'bout a round of applause...

      • I heard from one of the teachers at my old school that one of my favorite students, who is now in the 3rd grade, is failing because he can't "handle the pressure." I literally teared up at the thought that such a sweet boy can't enjoy school without being worried about passing the TAKS. this child was quite sensitive and his current teacher is very no nonsense, so i can only imagine what he's experiencing. the same teacher also told me about another former student who is on his 3rd teacher since school started because he'd been mistreated by two teachers that year. according to her, one teacher said he'd placed his penis on a girl when in fact, he had not. and the other made him get on all fours and face the wall. and they both had a habit of isolating him from the class for long periods of time. now, when i had this child he was a handful, but i always felt that part of the issue was he needed to be in a smaller setting and i would never have resorted to such tactics. i'm praying that things work out for him because as he gets older, the classes will get bigger and i worry he'll get lost in the shuffle.
      • it's stories like those that make me wish i was still teaching. on the other hand, it makes me glad that i am not. if nothing else, it's solidified that the education field, despite all its challenges, is where i want and need to be.
      • i had a dream the other night that i was being proposed to... it was odd because we were at some family gathering, on a boat. it's strange because i can't imagine either of our families ever having an event on a boat. also, it was supposed to be a surprise, but i was fully aware what was going on. anyway, i took it as a sign that i'm becoming more open to the idea of marriage.
      • i must admit that i am obsessed with hair. i just had something done to mine, and my mind is already thinking about what to do next. i'm over the long hair *yawn* and am back to the short cut I really want. though it's old, I'm inspired by the pixie cut Rihanna had in the Take a Bow video. i got my hair done last week and my stylist explained what i needed to accomplish it. so, unless i get nervous about rocking it, i'm doing a short cut next.
      • i have these earrings that say Young Gifted & Black (except mine are gold), and i wore them on the drive back to Austin from Tulsa. i stopped in a Waffle House and two of the (White) waitresses complimented me on the earrings. it can be hard to read them, so one asked me what they said, and when I told her, she looked taken aback and said, "Oh! That's different." I couldn't help but chuckle and shake my head.
      • one of the classes i'm taking this semester has 11 required texts... granted, i'm sure we won't read them all in their entirety, but that's still a lot of reading. between my 3 classes and the class i'm TAing, i'm looking to spend around $350on books this semester, and that's with Amazon. thankfully, i have free Prime shipping
      • I have a taste for a Lunchable... i'm pretty sure they're not good for you, but i still want it.
      • last Wednesday was my first day back at work, and it was sooo hard for me to come in. i don't hate my job, but I don't have a passion for it. so, i'm looking forward to the new job starting in a few weeks and really hoping that i enjoy it.
      • my 3rd favorite holiday, Valentine's Day, is quickly approaching. i know, i know, it's completely commercialized and as one of my married friends pointed out, he doesn't need a made up holiday to tell his wife he loves her. i get all of that, and agree with it. but, i'm a sucker for the spirit behind the holiday and the expressions of that.
      • i need to have some dental work done and i'm already dreading it. it turns out i chose the crappy dental plan, which is primarily restricted to those chain offices. i looked at the reviews and well, they're not too good. granted, people usually only review on Yelp when the service is really bad or really good. of course, all the great dentists aren't covered by my plan. :-(
      • i can't believe people really think that FB is ending on 3/15. *sigh* FB makes a boat load of money, they just had a movie about its origin, and the creator was featured as Time's Person of the Year. if it was shutting down, wouldn't you think it'd be reported on all major news outlets? common sense ain't so common.
      • my makeup skills really need to be upped this year. i'm not big on a lot of makeup, but i need to step my game up in that area. matter of fact, i need to step up my style overall.
      • My FB  hiatus is approaching. the past few years i've deactivated my account just to have a break from it all. this year, i'll probably add Twitter to the list. i'm just over the online world... too much negativity, cattiness, etc.
      until next time...

        1.01.2011

Should old acquaintance be forgot, & never brought to mind...

Happy New Year, everyone! I spent it, at home, with JE, watching movies, drinking bubbly, and enjoying the bomb (if I do say so, myself) dinner of roast chicken, mac & cheese, mustard greens, cornbread, peach cobbler and the requisite black eyed peas... if nothing else, starting off 2011 full as a tick! :-)
Christmas was great. I went home to Tulsa, and enjoyed time with my family. Everyone liked my handmade gifts, and I received some nice things as well. I even got my stand mixer, which I mentioned to my grandmother, but didn't think I'd get. words can't explain how excited i am about this stand mixer!
We did have a mishap on Christmas Eve when my grandmother's oven decided to stop working. of course, we all planned to start cooking Christmas Eve and continue the following morning. but, we rallied together and had dinner. my Houston aunt and i went to my uncle's house and cooked the sides while my Ft. Worth aunt cooked the turkey, dressing, and rolls at a neighbor's house across the street. i was so proud that we all came together and no one even mentioned not having dinner. of course, all the cooking, back and forth driving, dish washing for 9 people, and just having to adjust to the change of plans left me worn out. i was in bed by 9!
due to the cold weather, my dad and i didn't go to my mom's grave site. however, he did look a lot better than he did when I saw him at Thanksgiving. it seems that he's been taking his medication. imagine that, take your meds and you feel better! ;-) he also gave me and my sister some perfume for Christmas. i honestly thought that my sister would either refuse the gift or throw it in the trash. But, she surprised me and took it. *shrug* Wonders never cease.
as I was riding around Tulsa, I got this feeling that in a few years, I'll be moving back there. it's crazy because there was a time (not so long ago) that I refused to even consider moving back home. but, you know, i think it's about time to come back. i'm ready to settle down.
I have been LOVING every second of my break. i wake up when i want to, do what i want, when i want, and just feel incredibly stress free. i go back to the (very) part time job next Wednesday, my school and my new job don't start until January 18th. after that, it's back to the grind.
2010 marks not only the end of a year, but a decade. in 10 years, i graduated high school & college, completed my Master's, lived in Atlanta, Tulsa, Santa Barbara, Houston, and Austin, made some amazing friends, lost my mom, made some foolish mistakes (and learned from them). I'm thankful for every experience and looking forward to what 2011 has to offer.
        until next time...
