84 degrees...

  • 84 degrees... is the temp my classroom got up to today. Why? Well, when I arrived at school, the hallway to the 1st grade hall was warm. i thought this was strange, but thought maybe they'd turned the A/C back on a little later than normal, because that has happened in the past. well, it turns out the motor on the A/C is broken and so the 1st and 2nd grade classrooms were without air. i turned the lights off in the room, and since i have a corner room, opened the blinds to let some sun shine in and me and my students stayed that way all day long. i taught one lesson first thing in the morning and for the rest of the day my students were in work stations. Apparently the motor will take a few days to repair. *sigh* i did tell my kids that the air would be broken tomorrow, so hopefully, a lot of them won't come tomorrow!
  • Man in the Mirror had been on my brain for a while now. My mom LOVED that song; i thought i'd been thinking about it because i missed her. be that as it may, the world has certianly lost a legend. R.I.P. MJ!
  • ugh... i'm totally irritated by the crass comments regarding him and his death. Yes, the man had his flaws, but... there's a time for everything.
  • i'm slowly but surely reminded i don't have a new or next to new vehicle anymore. i drive an 2005 Neon, so you'd think i'd know this by now. LOL! the thing is i've gotten accustomed to going to the shop for maintenance and being told everything's good. so, i went in to fire.stone to get an oil change and to get the A/C checked because it's been slow to cool. (However, that's to be expected since it's been OVER 100 degrees the past few days!) a few hours later i leave with oil changed, a better running A/C system, a new tire and without about $300. *sigh* apparently, i also need a tune-up, which is another $300. with the miles i put on my car, i have to get that done ASAP. that'll be taken care of my next pay period. i also need to get a chip in my windshield fixed. over a year ago, while driving to school, a rock hit it and left a nice little chip. i'd let it be since it was only about the size of a nickel, but with the heat being what it is, i'm afraid it'll get worse. i called one place to get it done and they quoted me nearly $90 to have it repaired. that seemed a little too high for me, so i'm going to call a few more places. it's times like these i wish i had someone around to help out witht these expenses. BUT, i am soooo very grateful that i even have the money to cover these expenses.
  • After getting the auto work done, I decided to get a pedicure. Sometimes when I have to do a not-so-fun thing with my money, I like to do a (much) less expensive thing to treat myself. Anyway, while I'm in the shop, there's an older woman getting her nails done. i guess the nail tech told her she needed to retire, and so the woman asked the nail tech if she was going to pay her bills. She didn't say it in a mean way, but it made me laugh all the same. Then the nail tech tells her she needs to find a man to help her out with that. The woman then tells the tech that if she knows any rich, handsome, men who don't require sex then to pass her number on to them! Uhm, yeah, good luck with that! but, it did get me to wondering what my sex life would be like when i'm in my 60s. hopefully i won't be like that woman!
  • I always address my students as "sir," "ma'am," "Ms. _____" and "Mr. _______." I don't why i started doing that. i think it's because i see them as little people, even though they're only 6, 7, and (sometimes) 8 years old. when i talk to them and explain things to them, i act like they're adults. i mean, i don't talk with them about adult topics and i use kid friendly language, but i certainly don't baby them. what's so funny to me is more often than not, they're able to understand my point(s) and adjust accordingly. i'd like to think whenever i have kids, i'll treat them the same way. I don't know what made me think about that. I guess i'm just reflecting on my teaching practices...
until next time...

Oh my being 80+ degree weather is not cool for indoors! I remember back in elementary school we were sent home early if the a/c was broke and the weather was too warm!

Unfortunately people will be talking about Michael Jackson, both postively and negatively, for a good while after he is buried/cremated/whatever...*sigh* Sad to say but I hope the continuous music tributes won't go passed this weekend.

They don't even make Neon's anymore! Cool!

I may have to be a copy cat and get my feet scrubbed and rubbed...hmmmmm

Ain't no telling how we're going to be when we get older.

84 degrees indoor? That's nothing for Houston! I heard you don't send kids home until it hits 99 inside. LOL. I kid, sort of. They definitely would've closed schools here if the a/c were out and a heatwave was occurring.

I definitely plan to add a lot more MJ to my Zune this weekend. He had a lot of flaws and eccentricities but his music will outlive all that and it was good to too.

Phew 84 - poor you missus!

I hate the MJ coverage, it's like the Princess Di feeding frenzy.

People need to refect on why they think they would want that life for themselves or their kids.

He represents the good and bad of our culture today. I too hope the music lives on, especially the early stuff, that bright as button little kid, with so much talent and possibility.

By the time you get old no-one will be getting old, so don't worry.....

i don't even recall the A/C being out when i was in elementary school. the would close school early if the whole school was without it, but not for a few classes. they want the $$ too badly.

i didn't even know they didn't make Neons anymore. *shrug*

you should go! you know the toes gotta stay lookin' nice during the summer!

BH:
well, the thing is, if one school is closed, they have to close others because all schools in the district have 20 days for summer school. so, it's more like a political move for us not letting school out.

yeah, i added a lot of his music to my iPod this morning. i thought i had more than i did...

apprentice:
yeah, we didn't have it today either, but it's not as bad. i guess because we are used to and expect it.

i hate it too. i've been trying to avoid it as much as i can. i was watching the CBS news special and i saw him as that "bright as a button kid" and it made me smile. i didn't grow up in that era, but that's how i'd like to best remember him.

i certainly home that's the case!
